Physical Education is a skills based curriculum.  It focuses on the 4 key areas of being healthy, physical, developing thinking and social skills. It aims to develop children’s physical competence and knowledge of movement and safety, and their ability to use these to perform in a wide range of activities associated with the development of an active and healthy lifestyle. It also develops children’s confidence and generic skills, especially those of collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking and aesthetic appreciation. Through their growing knowledge and understanding of their health and wellbeing children learn to appreciate the benefits of physical activity to lead a healthy and active life.

In EYFS there is a child centred approach to the teaching of PE. Children take part in a weekly PE lesson where they have the opportunity to express themselves through dance and movement, using a variety of different resources. As ‘Physical Development’ is a Prime Area, continuous provision is in place.

In collaboration with teachers, the PE leads are supporting the delivery of PE lessons. PE is taught for at least 1½ hours each week. All children are challenged to achieve the best they can in Dance, Gymnastics and Outdoor Games. In addition, each class accesses The Daily Mile regularly.  Children are taught to swim in Year 4 with weekly swimming lessons at the local swimming pool. These lessons are delivered by swimming teachers from the leisure centre.

Through the regular involvement of a wide variety of sports professionals (Freddie Fit), children maintain enthusiasm for being physically active and it enhances and enriches their PE curriculum.

The PE scheme we follow at Bowker Vale has been created by members of the PE Association, both dedicated to their roles of developing PE across school and recognised as leaders in PE Professional Learning within Manchester.  Dance, Gymnastics and Games schemes progress clearly through the key stages and consider how to address four key areas of development - Physical ME, Social ME, Thinking ME and Healhy ME.
