French

French is led by Mrs Nicholson at Bowker Vale.

French at Bowker Vale is taught in Years 3,4 5 and 6.

Learning a language promotes and encourages an appreciation of other cultures.  It fosters curiosity and a broader understanding of the world they live in.  It should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language, both in speech and in writing.  It should provide the foundation for learning further languages, ultimately providing pupils with the skills to study and work in other countries.

The Bowker Vale French Curriculum:

  • Provides pupils with opportunities to communicate and learn new ways of thinking through an appropriate balance of spoken and written language.
  • Enables pupils to understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of sources.
  • Lays the foundation for further language teaching at Key Stage 3.

We try to make lessons fun and we listen and join in with lots of songs and play lots of games.  The best way to learn a language is to have lots of opportunities to repeat anything you learn.

We also study some cultural aspects and traditions of France such as how Christmas, Easter and Pancake Day are celebrated.  We learn where France is and how we might typically travel there.  This year we are hoping to learn about French artists and more French history.  Every year we spend time learning about Bastille Day and how important it is to French people.

Any vocabulary we learn has to be repeated many times.  If you would like to do any learning and revision at home 'You Tube' is a great resource as you can listen to the vocabulary spoken by French people.

The following is a list of vocabulary which is worth practicing:

Numbers

Colours

Words for please and thank you  -  'S'il vous plait'    'Merci'

Animal names

Food names

Pictures below show children being creative when learning about Bastille Day.
