Mental Health and Wellbeing

Why is mental health and wellbeing important for schools?

At Bowker Vale Primary School, we believe that good mental health and emotional wellbeing are essential for children to feel happy, safe, confident and ready to learn.

We take a whole-school approach to mental health and wellbeing. We want every child to feel valued, included and supported, knowing that they belong and that there are trusted adults they can talk to.

We recognise that mental health is about more than responding when things go wrong. It is also about helping children develop the skills and confidence to manage their feelings, build positive relationships and cope with life's challenges.

How we support children's wellbeing

We promote positive mental health and wellbeing through everyday school life by:

  • Building positive, trusting relationships between children and adults.

  • Creating a safe, caring and inclusive environment where everyone feels they belong.

  • Helping children recognise, understand and talk about their feelings.

  • Developing confidence, independence, resilience and positive self-esteem.

  • Teaching children strategies to manage worries, emotions and challenges.

  • Encouraging kindness, respect, friendship and positive relationships.

  • Listening to children's views and providing opportunities for them to ask for help.

  • Identifying children who may need additional support and working closely with families and other professionals.

  • A well established therapetic offer in our 'Lotus Room'

  • Place2Be sessions - this is a children’s mental health charity, based in our school one day a week, with over 30 years’ experience working with pupils, families and staff in UK schools. They provide mental health support in schools through one-to-one and group counselling using tried and tested methods backed by research.

Working together

We know that every child is different and that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to wellbeing. We work closely with parents and carers to identify concerns early and make sure children receive the right support.

Our aim is for every child at Bowker Vale to feel safe, happy, understood and confident to be the best version of themselves.

If you have concerns about your child's mental health or emotional wellbeing, please speak to a member of our school team. We are always here to listen and help.

Staff Wellbeing

We recognise that the wellbeing of our staff team is equally important. We are committed to creating a positive, supportive working environment where staff feel valued, listened to and supported, recognising that looking after our staff helps them to provide the very best care and support for our children
